About ABKA

Established in 1925, we now have around 100 members who meet monthly over the course of the year and welcome visitors. ABKA is a member of the Welsh Beekeepers Association. We have a very active training section which regularly runs Beginner and Improver courses. These courses are based on peer-to-peer learning programme so we actively develop and support those who are new to beekeeping. As an Association, we favour our locally adapted Welsh Black honey bee (Apis mellifera mellifera) over less suitable honey bees from milder climates. WE STRONGLY DISCOURAGE THE IMPORTING OR PROLIFERATION OF NON-LOCAL BEES (e.g. BUCKFAST or CARNIOLAN) DUE TO THE POTENTIAL FOR INTRODUCING DISEASE ONTO THE ISLAND AND AGGRESSIVE DAUGHTER COLONIES.

As an Association we cover the Isle of Anglesey (Ynys Mon) and the connected mainland for about 20 miles, encircled by the Snowdonia mountains including Bangor and Caernarfon.

Where can you find us?

We meet regularly at Rhosmeirch Community Hall for lectures and discussions. Just after leaving Llangefni town centre turn left on the B5111 towards Rhosmeirch (also signposted to Oriel Ynys Mon Heritage Centre). After one mile you’ll pass through Rhosmeirch village (LL77 7SX) and as the road bends to the left, you’ll see a turning on the right by a telephone box. Rhosmeirch Community hall is a quarter of a mile down the lane on the right.

Since the COVID pandemic, we have also made use of digital platforms which has meant we have been able to broaden our guest speakers to national and international beekeepers and allied specialists.

Our next meeting…

On the 1st Wednesday of October we will host our own association Honey Show at our usual venue. A schedule of the classes is available here Honey Show
